Margot Robbie will be lacing up her skates to play one of the most vilified sports figures in history.

The Suicide Squad star has signed on to portray figure skater Tonya Harding in the upcoming film I, Tonya, Entertainment Weekly confirms.

At age 21, Harding rose to fame from a hardscrabble blue-collar background in Oregon to become the favorite going into the 1994 Winter Olympics after winning the Figure Skating Championships and silver at the World Championships.

But perhaps what Harding, now 45, is most known for is also her career-ending moment.

In Detroit in January 1994, one month before the Games, fellow American skater and rival Nancy Kerrigan was attacked at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Before the competition, Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and one of her bodyguards hired someone to break Kerrigan’s legs. Kerrigan was struck in the knee during the attack, which forced her to quit the competition. Kerrigan’s agonizing « Why me? » after getting hit became one of the most memorable moments in 1994.

In March of that same year, Harding was banned from the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life after she pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution in the attack.

A director or cast has yet to be announced for I, Tonya.
